NHS problem

Health systems are struggling to manage the increasing demand for services, with high numbers of patients needing to be seen in a hospital setting.

The solution

Isla is a powerful digital pathway platform for healthcare providers to support patients throughout their care journey. Isla’s mission is to revolutionise healthcare by enabling continuous, real-time insight into a patient’s condition through a seamless and asynchronous process. This innovative approach allows clinicians to monitor patients remotely and intervene proactively, leading to faster, more confident decision-making that not only saves time but also significantly enhances patient care. Isla’s  commitment  to developing broadly applicable technology, now supporting over 40 specialties, has been instrumental in its adoption across more than 30 NHS trusts. The platform streamlines caseload management by providing: end-to-end digital pathway management, real-time visibility of patient conditions, and powerful clinical decision support. Isla’s Co-founders Peter Hansell and James Jurkiewicz both had professional backgrounds in healthcare transformation. However, it was their personal experience of seeing how difficult it is to provide medical care to vulnerable family members, that fuelled their determination to find a solution. Recognising the importance of timely patient data, Pete & James set out to build a platform that would empower clinicians with comprehensive insights for remote patient monitoring. Their goal was to provide greater context for clinical decision-making, enabling proactive healthcare that benefits both patients and doctors alike. And so, in 2019, in London, Isla Health (also known as Isla) was founded.

Impact

Isla has been adopted across over 30 NHS Trusts, with over 40 different outpatient specialties now supported. The platform has reached over 1 million submissions, enabling it to actively monitor and manage patients’ health. Our community Trusts have demonstrated a significant reduction in the number of home visits required, saving £300,000+ per annum depending on overall activity.

Key highlights across Community: 4,062 community miles saved, 50% of same-day demand de-escalated, 2.5x quicker to receive specialist input. Our acute partners have delivered a significant increase in capacity through more effective telephone appointments and a reduction in face-to-face activity. Over 80% of patients submit the information that is requested from them in advance, meaning that decisions can be made in a timely way and without additional appointments. An example of the impact of this in practice, is in North West London ICS where Teledermatology was implemented on the Isla platform, reducing average patient waiting time from 13 days to one day.

Key highlights across Acute: over £1.3m saved as part of Telederm rollout, 17,000+ patients removed from the waitlist in 10 months, 8x less likely to need surgical re-operation of patient’s wound.
