DigitalHealth.London Spotlight: Visiba

DigitalHealth.London spotlight: Visiba

This week, we’re shining the DigitalHealth.London spotlight on Accelerator company, Visiba. The Nordic health technology organisation specialises in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for patient triage.

What is the problem you are trying to solve and why is it important?

Triage involves accurately and safely assessing patients and directing them to the most appropriate care to meet their needs. It is a complex and high-risk task, yet current methods of triage and navigation fail to reflect this reality. This responsibility is often left to staff with little clinical training or patients are expected to self-navigate to the appropriate “front door” in an increasingly complicated healthcare system.

As a result, patients often end up in the wrong service. For example, research has shown that up to 30% of Emergency Department attendances could be safely managed in Primary Care. One study showed that 74% of urgent care dispositions could be downgraded if a clinician reviewed them.

Visiba Triage uses a proprietary AI model to replicate this high-quality clinical assessment, improving the accuracy of the triage process and saving time for those involved.

What is the solution you have developed and how can it help with the problem?

Visiba Triage is a medically-trained technology that uses a probabilistic graphical model and sits at the front door of healthcare services. It rapidly collects patient information and determines the urgency of their presentation, including symptoms, and the differential diagnoses to enable healthcare providers to direct patients to the right service.

The triage solution is being used in urgent care and primary care in the Nordics and the UK to improve patient triage and navigation. Through deployment in NHS 111 services, Visiba Triage reduced the number of patients escalated to acute services and doubled the number of patients who could be safely managed without the need for a GP appointment.

What is the history of your company?

Visiba was founded in Sweden in 2014 and is well-known as a trusted technology partner to healthcare providers. From a foundation grounded in patient communication, Visiba’s products have evolved through clinician feedback.

Visiba Triage is used at the front door of healthcare in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and the UK. The company is one of the leading voices in AI safety in Digital Triage and has a dedicated research partnership with Self-Care Academic Research Unit (SCARU), Imperial College London. This collaboration is generating the evidence base needed around the safe deployment of AI-enabled triage in healthcare.

How has your time on the DigitalHealth.London Accelerator so far helped you in achieving your goals?

DigitalHealth.London has been an opportunity to carve out time to get to know colleagues working in the health technology industry. There are many wonderful people, businesses and partnerships working in this space and it has been both helpful and reassuring to understand that we often share similar challenges. Learning from each other and as a combined force, we believe we can start to address some of the challenges and continue to drive digital innovation in healthcare.

Visiba is currently in Cohort 8 of the DigitalHealth.London Accelerator programme and is an alumnus of the DigitalHealth.London Leap programme.

The DigitalHealth.London Accelerator programme is funded by the UK Government via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). It is delivered by the Health Innovation Network (HIN) South London in partnership with the Office of Life Sciences, CW+, Medicity, NHS England, the Mayor of London and the Levelling Up Fund.
