Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Specialist
Chelsea Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Biography: As a Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Specialist, Shivaani provides patients and families with ongoing diabetes education and self-management skills, allowing them to continue with day-to-day life. She works closely with schools to train school staff about diabetes management so they can support patients in the school environment. She also reviews diabetes management making regular adjustments to medications and reviews dietetic support.
Horizon Fellowship project summary: Shivaani’s project aims to help create a platform for virtual training, something which they found effective and time efficient during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This educational platform will be tailored for school staff, providing them with the knowledge to care for patients effectively.
Estimated number of patients / staff impacted by the project: All the team’s patients are attending school which means that all 221 patients require school training, and a minimum of two teachers per school must be trained. As a team, they work with over 45 schools, so it is estimated that training will need to be provided to 60 – 80 individuals a year.
Goal(s) for time on the Horizon Fellowship programme: Shivaani would like the Fellowship to help her interact with new people and learn new ways to build current services. The diabetes world is moving with technology, and Shivaani wants to learn more about how to engage people with more digital platforms.
