NHS Problem

In the UK, over 20 million battle musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, a silent strife impacting one-third of the population. Conventional physiotherapy, the frontline for MSK disorders, falters as 70% of patients fail to complete it effectively. Amidst this, NHS has prolonged waiting time for physiotherapy, averaging 45 days for routine and 18 days for urgent appointments. The deeper struggle lies in patient-physiotherapist dynamics. Patients, grappling with self-dependent exercises, face barriers—low motivation, confidence, and a void of feedback. Physiotherapists glimpse only fragments of this journey every few weeks. Bridging these gaps and addressing flaws in care is vital for MSK treatment within the NHS.

The Solution

Rootally AI is a computer vision company focused on solving the highly prevalent, yet extremely overlooked issue of chronic back and joint pain (musculoskeletal disorders). Our product Allycare is a physiotherapist-validated solution comprised of two parts:

  1. A mobile app that acts as an interactive, AI-enabled “trainer” providing patients with real-time, intuitive feedback and cues to perform rehabilitative exercises that are central to reducing pain.
  2. A corresponding cloud-based dashboard that provides physiotherapists with in-depth information about patients’ ability to perform exercises, as well as their compliance with a prescribed exercise treatment plan.

Impact

Allycare has the potential to revolutionize musculoskeletal care in the United Kingdom, addressing key challenges faced by the National Health Service (NHS). For patients, the intervention ensures early identification and personalized management of musculoskeletal conditions, leading to improved quality of life and quicker recovery times. The user-friendly app fosters higher patient engagement, adherence to treatment plans, and shorter recovery periods, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits.

On the service side, Allycare’s solution streamlines processes, reducing face-to-face consultations by 50% and optimizing resource allocation. This translates to financial savings, allowing healthcare providers to redirect resources towards critical cases. Data-driven decision-making enhances treatment outcomes and efficiency, contributing to a more robust healthcare system.

At the national level, Allycare’s intervention reduces overall healthcare costs by addressing musculoskeletal problems effectively. Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions account for 40% of the NHS workload, incurring an annual expenditure of £5 billion which underscores the critical need for strategic interventions. Recognizing that 40% of this expenditure is attributed to potentially preventable risk factors presents a significant opportunity for the NHS to save substantial healthcare costs. Improved population well-being and alignment with NHS goals underscore its potential impact. Recognizing that a significant portion of NHS expenditure is preventable, Allycare presents a strategic opportunity to transform healthcare spending into savings.
