PreActiv
NHS Problem
In the UK, 1.6 million people undergo major surgery annually, with 30 percent experiencing complications, impacting patient recovery, quality of life and long-term health. This costs healthcare providers £14 billion each year and amounts to an additional 162 million kg of CO2. Individualised prehabilitation reduces the risk of complications by 50 percent, hospital stays for all patients by two days, carbon emissions and reduces cancellations on the day by a third. These extra bed days could be used to increase elective capacity. However, a face-to-face prehabilitation service is expensive costing on average £1050pp and restricted by staff availability.
The Solution
PreActiv’s platform provides individualised, dynamic, evidence-based prehabilitation programmes that are cross-device compatible. Programmes are created using patient’s health data and progressively adapt after every session based on feedback. They also receive educational materials, access to a curated community forum, robust customer support and their progress is tracked, which is feedback to the patient and the trust.
By automating the customisation of courses, our approach is scalable and costs a fraction at 88 percent less than traditional programs. We widen access to personalised prehabilitation, giving patients the tools to enhance their treatment outcomes whilst helping trusts meet NHS England’s perioperative guidelines.
Impact
In an average trust, 6,800 people undergo major surgery each year. Complications and additional bed days cost approximately £68.4M. Applying individualised prehabilitation could save £38.2M, 15,640 bed days and reduce CO2 emissions by 659,150kg. These extra bed days could be used to increase elective capacity.
