Olivia Raglan
ST7 Obstetrics and Gynaecology Registrar, Women and Children’s
Biography: I am an ST7 Obstetrics and Gynaecology Registrar completing training in robotic surgery, advanced laparoscopy and complex endometriosis care at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Alongside clinical training, I have completed a PhD in Gynaecological Oncology at Imperial College London and attained colposcopy accreditation.
Since October 2023, I have been working as part of the Endometriosis team based at Chelsea site. The demand for the Endometriosis service at Chelsea has rapidly expanded in recent years, exposing new, unmet needs for our population of patients. Working daily within the endometriosis team, I have gained a better understanding of the patient care pathway, identifying inefficiencies, areas for enhancement and opportunities for service improvement. I would now like to take an active role in participating in endometriosis service improvements, developing a new protocol and implementing new practices.
I coordinate the See One Club for pan-London O&G trainees, running monthly educational webinars in operative O&G skills. I am immediate-past Secretary for the UK Audit and Research Committee in O&G (UK ARCOG), and Trainee Representative for the O&G Section, Royal Society of Medicine.
I am passionate about improving access and delivery of high-quality equitable care for women.
Horizon Fellowship project summary: Endometriosis is a chronic condition that affects 1:10 women, resulting in chronic pelvic pain, painful periods and/or subfertility. Treatment is centred on quality-of-life improvement using a holistic approach alongside medical treatment, and most entering our service as a tertiary referral centre will be offered surgery. Patients require multiple appointments over a prolonged period, for imaging, other specialty opinion and pre-operative assessment pre-surgery. The endometriosis service has a significant waiting list and is not optimised for patient engagement. Complaints are due to waiting times and lack of communication. My project will create a digital interface between the endometriosis multi-disciplinary team and patient while on their care pathway.
Estimated number of patients / staff impacted by the project: Up to 1,000 patients with endometriosis.
Goal(s) for time on the Horizon Fellowship programme: I hope that by undertaking the Fellowship I will gain a network of colleagues who can support me in digital innovation projects such as this one, and bring endometriosis care to the forefront of technological possibilities for optimising patient care.
