Nompilo Mbanjwa
Senior staff nurse
Biography: I do theatre coordinating by working in conjunction with the anaesthetists , surgeons and other members of the multidisciplinary team in the management of complex situations situations, for example , prioritising the emergency cases according to the clinical needs of the patients. As a senior band 6 , I take charge of the development of daily responsibilities, including work allocations , deployment and supervision of staff , to ensure the smooth running of the theatres . I organise my workload to ensure that the interests of patients are met , for example I monitor the staff if the safety huddle has been done on time , five steps of safer surgery is being adhered to according to LocSSIPs , and also monitoring that the theatre lists start on time in order to avoid unnecessary delays and cancellations.
Horizon Fellowship project summary:The aims of the project is to have a standardised protocol on how to run the emergency/ CEPOD list efficiently. One of the examples on how to improve this service is to have all surgical specialities come at 0800 in the morning to discuss which patient is going to be the main priority. By doing so , that will prevent time wasting whereby the anaesthetist chasing the surgeons , and also the anaesthetist asking the surgeons to talk spear to one another which patient is the priority.
Estimated number of patients / staff impacted by the project: Approximately 10 patients.
Goal(s) for time on the Horizon Fellowship programme:By participating on the Horizon Fellowship, it will align perfectly with my professional development goals . It will allow me to bridge the gap between my recent completion of emerging leaders course and my aspirations to enter the NHS digital world. Furthermore, the Fellowship will provide me a focused and specialised training programme that will enhance my knowledge and skills specifically in the section of digital healthcare.
