NHS Problem:
3.8 million patients live with chronic wounds at a cost of £8.3 billion – more than smoking and obesity-related disease spend. Limitations and gaps in traditional wound care practice has led to a lack of standardised, good quality wound assessment data and a significant variation in care (Guest et al).
Solution:
Minuteful for Wound is a digital wound management solution consisting of a smart phone app, caseload management portal and BI dashboard. The solution is DTAC compliant, CE accredited and uses innovative AI and machine learning to provide consistent measurement and assessment data to drive wound insights, helping clinicians dynamically monitor their wound caseload.
Impact:
Minuteful for Wound has driven the following benefits:
Cost savings
- £350 per year travel expenses saved per District Nurse due to access to virtual review
- £6,003 employment costs saved for each Band 5 post converted into Band three post due to increased oversight of care
- £2,362 treatment costs saved in optimising one pressure ulcer undergoing suboptimal ritualistic treatment over 12 week period identified using online caseload portal
Time Savings
- 83 hours per year (£1,430 per year) saved per District Nurse due to virtual review
- 100 hours per year (£1,724 per year) saved per Tissue Viability Nurse due to access to virtual review
- £2,838 RGN visit costs saved in optimising 1 pressure ulcer undergoing suboptimal ritualistic treatment over 12 week period due to ritualistic practice being identified using online caseload portal
Capacity Releasing
- 150 additional patients per annum seen in the wound clinic due to reduction in unnecessary visits identified using the online caseload portal
- 700 additional 30 minute appointments per annum by hiring Band three staff instead of Band five staff
Qualitative
- Identification of misdiagnosed wounds – if wounds are misdiagnosed they can also be incorrectly or sub optimally treated, visibility of wound diagnosis enables incorrectly diagnosed wounds to be correctly classified and treated leading to improved healing rates and better outcomes for patients.
- Identification of sub-optimal treatment – Wounds heal faster when gold standard evidence based treatment is applied according to the type of wound, visibility of treatment applied to wounds e.g. compression therapy enables treatment plans to be optimised leading to improved healing rates and better outcomes for patients.
- Identification of red flags – patients with red flag symptoms can deteriorate rapidly, visibility of red flag symptoms and wound time series imagery can help to prevent deterioration leading to improved patient safety and a reduction in serious incidents.
- Patient engagement – when patients are unable to see the progress of their wound they can feel frustrated and 12 / 25 disengaged with their care, this can have a detrimental impact on the patient’s mental health. Visual visibility of the progression of their wound encourages patient’s and helps them to feel more confident that progress is being made leading to better compliance with treatment plans and better outcomes.
