NHS Problem

Every month, there are 10 million extra patient appointments required than delivered in primary care, leaving GP surgeries under tremendous pressure, whilst making it harder than ever for patients to see their GP. This problem isn’t going anywhere soon. It is expected to worsen, with a third of GPs expected to leave in the next five years. A major reason behind this is the highly time-pressured, rigid appointments; with 53% of GPs surveyed requesting more time with patients as the number one way to improve working conditions.

When primary care is unable to look after patients effectively in the community, all other parts of the healthcare system fall under more demand pressures – a solution is needed to effectively support primary care.

The Solution

GPAL is a smart practice management software to help GP surgeries optimally look after their patient population. We surface actionable insights on our dashboard, at a practice, condition group and individual level, to help practices better understand when and where to intervene; whilst our automated text-based patient recaller ensures we help bring in the right patient for the right appointment at the right time.

GPAL is aligned with national indicators, such as the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF), to provide practices with direct financial benefits whilst enabling proactive patient care.

Impact

Around 10% of all people in the UK have chronic long-term conditions; currently, these chronic patients take up around 40%, over 15 million per month, of all appointments in primary care. By ensuring these long-term patients are seen at the right time by the right clinician with the optimal appointment settings, we can enable better, more proactive patient care, reducing overall demand on practices.

For every ten patients recalled through GPAL, we will save enough clinical time for one additional patient appointment. We achieve this by optimising appointment mix and staff allocation, whilst planning appointments at practice demand troughs to minimise impact on overall demand. Practices currently miss out on an average of 10% of QOF funding, around £13k per practice, for a multitude of reasons; we can help practices achieve maximum funding in the most resource-efficient way.
