1 in 4 people are affected by musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, making it the third highest area of spend in the NHS. Around 30% of all GP appointments relate to MSK pain. If you factor in GP hours, the total amount of time spent reviewing MSK conditions in primary care equates to around 19 million hours per year.

A Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) evaluation of patient self-referral for MSK physiotherapy showed that the introduction of patient self-referral provides savings of £25,207 per 100,000 of the population.
