EMESO Ltd
NHS Problem
Medicine safety processes are outdated, largely manual, paper-based, and fragmented; particularly regarding the management of controlled drugs. In 2018/19, there were 3,000 unaccounted losses of controlled drugs reported to NHS England, with almost half of these cases involving controlled drugs that were lost, stolen or missing. Furthermore, organisations use pen and paper for the whole controlled drugs process: from ordering controlled drugs to administering them to a patient. Approximately 40% of a clinician’s time is taken up by paper-based record-keeping when dispensing controlled drugs. This highlights a large unmet need, backed by volumes of reported medicine incidents.
The Solution
EMESO is a digital medicines safety platform, aiming to replace traditional solutions to improve clinical efficiency and safety.
We’re addressing this unmet need by developing a suite of tools: the first of which is an electronic controlled drugs register, which aims to digitise this process allowing for a
fully-audited, and paperless platform. Our e-CD register will seamlessly integrate with existing healthcare systems providing real-time CD stock management to enable NHS staff to work with less friction in a digitally-enabled way, leading to both financial and time savings, improved staff performance, and environmental sustainability.
Impact
EMESO hopes to achieve the delivery of a digital medicines safety product aimed at making the medicines safety process more integrated, time efficient and safe for both NHS staff and patients.
The envisioned impact of our electronic CD register will lead to the following benefits:
- Stationery financial savings (approximately £1,000 per annum) – e.g. organisations will no longer need to purchase controlled drug registers
- Time savings (approximately 365 hours per annum) – e.g. porters will no longer be required to deliver controlled drugs books to pharmacy, and nurses will no longer
need to contact their pharmacy team to order controlled drugs. - Improved NHS staff performance – provide a digital tool to NHS staff, especially nursing and pharmacy staff, to work with reduced friction with the aid of technology
- Improved environmental sustainability – provide a fully-auditable, digital platform which eliminates the need for pen and paper
