Dexter James Wiseman
Respiratory Physician in Respiratory Medicine
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Biography: Dexter is a respiratory and general medicine doctor, coming to the end of his registrar training in October 2023, when he will be transitioning into a consultant role. He has a special interest in sleep medicine and sleep-disordered breathing and will be working with the current sleep physiologists and physicians to improve the service and help bring down waiting times. He has a keen interest in digital health, devices, and their use in sleep diagnostics. Dexter is also a keen researcher and is involved in a number of research projects both within and outside the Trust.
Horizon Fellowship project summary: This project involves using a novel device (with CE certification) to help speed up sleep diagnostics. Currently, all patients are seen in the sleep clinic prior to any diagnostics being carried out, and then seen again afterwards prior to treatment. This project aims to utilise a novel device to go ‘straight to test’ in certain, carefully selected patients, thus bringing down waiting times. Device validation in specific patient groups will also be part of the project.
Estimated number of patients / staff impacted by the project: 500 patients per year from the sleep medicine referrals. 2 physicians, 2 physiologists and the bariatric surgery team.
Goal(s) for time on the Horizon Fellowship programme: Dexter hopes to use the opportunities available on the programme to enhance his project management skills, and gain knowledge of how business cases in an NHS trust are written.
