NHS Problem

Approximately 3 million children in the UK and 1 in 5 children globally report a chronic illness or medical condition that requires regular treatment or medical care.60% of all young children undergoing an anaesthetic and surgery report significant anxiety. Research has also shown that for paediatric patients heightened levels of pre-procedure anxiety increase the possibility of negative psychological consequences such as continuing anxiety, separating anxiety, problems with sleep, nightmares, irritability, and aggressiveness (Rattray et al,2005). There are not enough clinical psychologists or play specialists to prepare all young patients. Current approaches by hospitals to deliver information to young patients are via parents or traditional formats which do not engage a digitally native audience.

The Solution

Coggi Technologies Limited (CTL) have created a mobile application with an augmented reality chameleon that guides and accompanies children through gamified exercises to build mental resilience and well-being. The Coggi character is an augmented reality ‘chameleon’. A chameleon was chosen by the Founder’s 10-year-old daughter as an animal that can adapt and change colours depending on their environment. Coggi is a child-friendly name derived from the word cognition. Our first use case is for paediatric patients to help children manage their specific worries, reduce anxiety and any misinformation about their planned hospital procedure. The mobile application applies the science of Positive Psychology with clinical knowledge and evidence together with immersive technology.

Impact

The solution supports children to understand the procedure they will go through in the hospital with the objective of a better patient experience and a reduction in the numbers of cancelled, abandoned and repeat procedures from anxiety, misinformation and clinician time needed to prepare young patients in the hospital.

For clinicians and healthcare, the solution provides:

  • Reduced risk of psychological well-being issues developing from distressing hospital experiences
  • Fewer patients who need expert psychology support
  • Reduced preparation time for busy doctors and nurses
  • Fewer cancellations of procedures from distress
  • Reduced cost and risk of sedation or general anaesthetic for repeat procedure

Hospital financial impact:

  1. Decrease patient risk from General Anaesthetic (GA)
  2. Reduce costs of MRI with GA and sedation
  3. Reduce GA MRI waiting lists
  4. Reduce play therapy and radiographer prep time
  5. Fewer referrals to psychology or play specialist teams
  6. Improved patient experience
