Midwife

Biography: Originally from Ireland, Alannah is a dual-trained registered nurse and midwife, currently practicing on the labour ward at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. Alannah is passionate about holistic health and patient education and is dedicated to empowering women with knowledge that can positively impact their pregnancies and overall health outcomes. Her current role involves caring for women in the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal stages, where she strives to support mothers and families throughout their birthing journeys.

Horizon Fellowship project summary: Alannah’s project focuses on developing a digital application that provides streamlined, single-point access to tailored pregnancy information. Utilising an intuitive, checkbox-based interface, the app delivers customised educational content on antenatal care, high-risk conditions, mental health support, safeguarding issues, labour preparation techniques, and postpartum support. It also offers resources on nurturing relationship dynamics throughout the transition to parenthood. Additionally, the app features a social platform to foster peer support, enabling users to connect, ask questions, and share experiences. The goal is to empower women and families by helping them feel more confident, positive, and in control of their pregnancy and birth experiences through education and integration.

Goal(s) for time on the Horizon Fellowship programme: Alannah’s aim is to gain expertise in using digital resources to create personalised pregnancy care tools and integrate them into hospital systems. She is also focused on developing a strong business case to secure ongoing support and funding for her project. Additionally, Alannah looks forward to connecting with like-minded fellows who are passionate about improving women’s health and dedicated to ensuring the best possible experience during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
