US medical device company Zimmer Biomet has agreed to acquire the Iovera business from US biopharmaceutical company Pacira BioSciences in a deal worth up to $140 million. The move highlights continued investor interest in non-opioid pain management technologies and the growing strategic value of innovation in musculoskeletal (MSK) health.
Under the agreement, Zimmer Biomet will pay $70 million upfront, with up to a further $70 million in revenue-based milestone payments through 2031. The company will obtain full rights to develop, manufacture and commercialise the Iovera system, which uses cold therapy to provide targeted pain relief.
The acquisition comes as health systems look for alternatives to opioid-based pain management. Iovera is currently used to support patients with knee pain and those preparing for or recovering from joint replacement surgery, with potential applications across a wider range of MSK conditions. Evidence reported by Pacira BioSciences suggests the technology can help reduce pain and decrease reliance on opioid medications following orthopaedic procedures.
For Zimmer Biomet, the deal strengthens its established orthopaedics portfolio and adds a complementary technology to its surgical and joint replacement offering. Analysts have noted that the company’s global reach and customer base could help accelerate adoption and expand access to the platform.
For Pacira BioSciences, the investment supports its strategy of focusing on its core biopharmaceutical business and broader pipeline of non-opioid pain therapies. The company has stated that proceeds from the transaction will be used to strengthen its balance sheet and support future growth initiatives.
The deal is the latest example of sustained investment and acquisition activity in pain management. It reinforces the strength of the market for pain management innovation and demonstrates ongoing appetite for acquisitions in the orthopaedics and musculoskeletal health sectors.
