Marta Messeri

Midwife

Biography: After graduating in Midwifery in 2016 in Italy, I have worked for 3 NHS trust over the past 7 years. Since January 2020, I have specialised in Homebirth and continuity of carer, offering women and family centred care. However, my passion lies with supporting women and families in achieving their infant feeding goals. For this reason, I qualified as a Lactation Consutant in December 2020 and I have been a Tongue tie practitioner since March 2023, completing a Master level course at the University of Wolverhampton this past February. I value informed choice and offering expert knowledge to the families I look after.

Horizon Fellowship project summary: During my time as a Tongue tie practitioner at the Trust, I have come to realise that there is a gap in the service for those families with complex feeding needs. They are often not identified timely or not addressed appropriately within the midwifery community setting. For those families who are unable to afford private lactation consultant, breastfeeding is not always an option. I would like to create a service to bridge this gap and support all families in their preferred infant feeding journey.

Estimated number of patients / staff impacted by the project: Potentially hundreds of families

Goal(s) for time on the Horizon Fellowship programme: I would like to write a business plan and be approved to start the clinic within the next 6-12 months.
