Jacob Davies
Senior Clinical Fellow, Respiratory Medicine
Biography: Jacob is a Senior Clinical Fellow in Respiratory Medicine at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust. His clinical interests include pleural disease and interventional pulmonology. After completing Internal Medicine Training he joined the Trust as a Postgraduate Medical Education Fellow, pursing his interests in the use of Technology for learning in Medicine, and is working towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education with Queen Mary’s University, London.
Horizon Fellowship project summary: This project expands on previously stared work at the Trust, addressing the problem of clinical skills development in medical doctors/trainees. Currently this relies on infrequent training sessions, and rare clinical procedure opportunities to support skills acquisition and retention, resulting in often poor trainee competence and confidence in these procedures. This project focuses on the use of Augmented Reality in simulation to teach clinical skills, such as intercostal chest drain insertion. The aims include providing greater flexibility to clinical skills teaching in the trust, reducing trainer burden utilizing skill-expert curated instructional media, and offering opportunities for repeated attendance and practice.
Estimated number of patients / staff impacted by the project: This project has the potential to benefit all Medical trainees cross-site from greater access to learning and development of clinical skills.
Goal(s) for time on the Horizon Fellowship programme: Jacob hopes this programme will help develop his skills in delivering improvement initiatives and innovation in the complex health system of the NHS, and support his professional development in both his clinical and educational career.
