NHS Problem
2.6 million UK citizens (children, young people and adults) are estimated to suffer from ADHD. Only 15 per cent have been diagnosed, of which about half have opted for pharmaceutical treatment. NHS services are overwhelmed by demand for diagnosis, leading to waiting lists exceeding five years in some regions.
Autism represents a similar challenge in terms of diagnosis waiting lists, with a substantial overlap between these two groups.
The societal cost of undiagnosed and untreated ADHD is substantial, estimated at an annual cost of approximately £18,000 per person. The costs of undiagnosed autism are estimated to be similar, if not higher.
The Solution
Braingaze develops diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD or Autism as well as for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease. These solutions leverage a patented connection (between very small involuntary eye movements and cognitive processing of information in the brain stem, both as a neural marker and as a therapy vector.
Impact
So far, our revolutionary new technology has supported over 5,000 clinical diagnoses of ADHD. Our R&D work – including clinical validation studies – has involved over 2,000 people in more than seven countries, internationally acclaimed universities and academic hospitals. Using our tools in diagnostic services for ADHD typically allows savings of around 25 per cent, combined with significant improvement of the quality and thus patient acceptance of the outcome of the diagnostic process.
Our eye-gaze-controlled therapeutic games have shown in clinical trials to deliver more than 50 per cent symptom reduction in children suffering from ADHD. Equally significant therapeutic effects are observed in elderly people suffering from Mild Cognitive Impairment or Alzheimer’s Disease. The effect size of our therapeutic games is larger than what some of the recently approved pharmaceutical treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease have shown to deliver, at a fraction of the cost and without any side effects.
