NHS Problem

In the UK, over two million people suffer from heart valvular and structural diseases, with over a million experiencing heart failure, exerting immense pressure on the NHS, which conducts c1.3 million echocardiograms and spends over £550 million on cardiac imaging (MRI, CT) annually. The NHS’s lack of accessible, personalised digital tools for structural heart disease leads to greater costs and hampers patient engagement and clinician education. Introducing such tools could boost understanding, treatment adherence, patient health outcomes, and yield significant cost savings for the healthcare system.

The Solution

Nova Heart creates patient-specific 3D models from 2D transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) data, delivering instantaneous, truly individualized dynamic simulations of a patient’s heart. Developed in collaboration with the prestigious German Heart Institute at Charite, our solution saves time and resources through streamlined data presentation and report preparation. In the long term, we aim for Nova Heart to be certified as a medical device and serve as an excellent cost-effective diagnostic, treatment planning and ongoing monitoring solution for patients with structural heart disease. Beyond its direct clinical applications, Nova Heart significantly improves patient experiences through enhanced engagement and greatly accelerates the training and education of healthcare professionals.

Impact

As a non-medical device, Nova Heart can save up to an estimated 20 minutes per patient undergoing an echocardiogram exam (through streamlined data presentation and report preparation for a patient with a congenital heart defect for example). With c1,300,000 echocardiograms performed in the UK every year, the potential time savings are very significant, roughly 430,000 clinician hours.

Once certified as a medical device, Nova Heart will be able to bring about additional significant savings by reducing the need for more expensive and invasive diagnostic means (MRI, CT) and serving as a cost-effective ongoing patient monitoring tool. It will also allow patient engagement with the potential to significantly improve rates of treatment compliance and adherence significantly, driving improved outcomes for patients and significant cost-savings for the NHS.

Nova Heart also acts as an immersive learning platform for medical professionals and students. The advanced 3D visualisation, real-time data manipulation and AI capabilities let users interactively engage with virtual patients, transcending conventional textbook learning and enabling them to learn more in less time.
