Headscape self-help website – helping young people cope with mental health issues

Designed by young people, for young people in Greenwich and Bexley, is Headscape, a self-help website to support mental health and wellbeing, safely and securely

From anxiety to eating disorders, phobias to bullying, depression, gender or anger issues, HeadScape covers over 30 different conditions with tailored information.

Uniquely, HeadScape, launched by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, offers young people the opportunity to independently undertake a mental health screening questionnaire, which when completed, provides individually tailored advice and information. Depending on the results, the site can offer young people living in Bexley and Greenwich the option to self- refer directly into their local Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services.

Lesley French, Clinical Director of Children’s Services at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust says: “Everything from the name ‘HeadScape’, to the design, language, colour scheme and navigation has been developed by groups of young people under 18 years of age, who told us that being able to access mental health support and services online would help them to explore and understand some of the feelings and experiences they were having.”

Designed to work on tablets, smart phones and PCs, the site is simple to use and highly visual with well-designed, colour-coded emoticons to represent feelings and situations.

Dr Doctor’s Smartphone technology to save NHS millions in reduced ‘Do Not Attends’

Dr Doctor is changing the way hospitals and patients communicate. Paper letters and phone calls can be slow and often inaccurate. Patients can get confused, hospital clinics run with gaps and patients end up waiting far longer than they need to.

Through Smartphone advanced text messaging, Dr Doctor is transforming NHS operations making it easier for patients to manage their appointments – making it more likely for them to turn up – and save the average NHS hospital £1-3m every year.

Using a patient portal and advanced text messaging tools, patients manage their own appointments. Patients can get an appointment reminder, as well as the offer to attend a last minute cancellation to make use of available capacity. Dr Doctor is being trialled in various NHS Trusts including South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and University College London NHS Foundation Trust.
