NHS problem

In the UK, there are 42,000 new cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) and 16,000 deaths per year making it the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the UK.

Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy are critical tools in the detection and diagnosis of CRC. In the UK, we perform 1.8million each year. CRC usually starts from a small polyp, which is an abnormal tissue growth in bowel. If the polyp is found early, it is easily removed during the colonoscopy in a quick, cost effective treatment and the patient returns to work the next day. Early detection has survival rates of over 90%, the treatment is low cost with minimal impact on patients’ lives. Late detection of CRC has survival rates of less than 10%, treatments (including chemotherapy and surgery) are expensive and the impact on patient’s quality of life is significant.

The NHS has a significant cost burden for late stage CRC treatment and end of life care. In the UK there are around 230,000 patients living with CRC.

The solution

Odin Vision is an award-winning Artificial Intelligence (AI) company founded by a team of eminent clinicians and artificial intelligence experts with the mission of creating the next generation of AI enabled applications for endoscopy. CADDIE, Odin’s unique cloud AI system, supports doctors to detect and characterize polyps during colonoscopy procedures.

Impact

Improved early detection, improved hospital efficiency and reduced healthcare costs. Improving early detection and diagnosis of cancer can lead to better patient outcomes and less life changing surgery.
