The NHS currently spends £6.1bn on obesity-related diseases. One of the leading causes of obesity is physical inactivity – in 2015, 63% of adults in the UK were overweight or obese. Promoting and incentivising physical activity has the potential to have a large impact on public health.
Sweatcoin incentivises physical activity behaviour change through a mobile app. The app tracks the number of steps walked and converts them into a reward point – the points can be redeemed for products, goods and services. Users are incentivised to walk more, resulting in long term, sustained behaviour change.
An academic study with the Institute of Digital Healthcare at the University of Warwick published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that with the use of Sweatcoin, users walked 20% more steps per day than they did before using the tool.
